By Cardinal Roger Mahony
Catholic Archbishop of Los Angeles

Sunday on the National Mall, tens of thousands of persons from across the nation will gather to call upon President Obama and Congress to enact comprehensive immigration reform. I will be one of them.

Our task will not be an easy one, as the present political culture does not lend itself to addressing controversial yet urgent issues such as immigration. Our cause, however, is right and true, not only for millions of immigrants in our country, but for the welfare of the nation.

Public questions of how immigrants impact our economy and culture are appropriate and should be considered by our elected officials. To date, these concerns have dominated our national immigration debate, but we should already know the answer. Our history has shown that immigrants have helped build this diverse nation into the greatest democracy and superpower in the world.

The ultimate and determinative question for our country, much less discussed, is whether we should embrace or reject the immigrant heritage that has served us so well.

Right now, the trend is disturbing. For the past 20 years, we have pursued enforcement-only policies which have not significantly stymied illegal entry into the country. Since 2000, for example, we have spent over $100 billion on immigration enforcement. During the same period, the number of undocumented persons has grown from 7 million to 11 million.

Our legal immigration system, basically ignored by Congress for nearly 50 years, is outmoded and inadequate to our future labor needs, especially when the economy recovers. There are simply not enough visas for unskilled workers to come legally. The family-based immigration system, which has helped immigrant families remain together and thrive for decades, is unworkable and now keeps families apart.

The combined effect of these policies has negatively impacted immigrant communities, including their legal resident and U.S. citizen members.

What is truly at stake in the immigration debate can be best articulated by the young people who have experienced the pain of a broken system.

Consider what happened to little Gabby, a U.S. citizen whose father was taken from their home at 5 a.m. when she was nine. Now 14, instead of playing with her friends she takes care of her baby brothers while her mother tries to make ends meet.

Gabby prays that Congress and the President enact immigration reform, so that she can once again feel the warmth of her father’s embrace and never again have nightmares that she will be left alone. Her fear is shared by about 4 million U.S. citizen children living in immigrant families who dread the day that their parents may be taken from them.

Or take the story of Raul, a university student who was brought to this country when he was one year old. Through no fault of his own, he is undocumented and his future is now in limbo. He told me that he wants to be known as a human being who works hard and contributes to society, not as someone who would harm anyone, as some of the politicians might say.

Instead of investing in these young persons as future leaders, we are instead alienating them and causing them to question the values of America, the only homeland they have ever known.

And why shouldn’t they question our values given the current state of affairs? Perhaps most troubling in all of this is how our immigration system has lessened us as a nation and stained our national character.

We now live in a society that has accepted de facto the presence of a permanent underclass in our society, without equal rights or protection under the law. This is a current reality our founding fathers sought arduously to avoid. As a moral matter, we should no longer tolerate a system which preys upon the vulnerability of our fellow human beings and benefits from their labor, yet fails to guarantee their basic human rights.

The rally today is not only about changing our national immigration laws, but about the future of our country. It is not as much about immigrants as about us, the American citizenry, and the type of society we want future generations to inherit.

We can return to our tradition as a nation of immigrants and welcome and invest in them, or we can continue to turn inward to the detriment of our own interests.

It is our choice. I pray we make the right one.

The writer is the Catholic Archbishop of Los Angeles.

If not, Gabby shouldn’t be, either.

To all of you that came to the USA correctly by USA law and became citizens, I welcome you and hope you have a happy new life in YOUR new country, the U.S.A.. TO all of you that sneaked into the USA have violated USA law and are criminal from the first step as well as a libility to the American taxpayer. The only one that makes a profit with your cheap illegal labor are your illegal employeers that pay you scab wages as you hold down jobs that belong to Americans. The other problem are the groups that speakout for the illegals and do not pay tax account they claim that their groups come under the tax exampt law but they have violated the rules of the tax exampt law by speaking on politial matters. With so many violations of the tax exampt law, the American people should require their members of congress to repeal this 1913 tax exampt law and then these groups could then have full freedom of speech and pay tax like the rest of us. The U.S.A. needs no change in our immigration laws which are correctly written. Please note that the 14th amendment was written for people who enter the USA NOT BY THEIR OWN FREE WILL. Read Chief Justice Taney DRED SCOTT case of 1857. So all you ILLEGALS, please leave the USA account your are here illegal.

Roger Mahony played moved the child abusing priest from one parish to another. He fought disclosing what was known about child abusing priests all the way to the supreme court where he lost. It is an open question as to whether or not he has come clean on what he did or did not know. He should be in jail. The fact that he wants to take the high ground on any issue is an Alice in Wonderland is simply not believable. He merely wants to distract us from the fact he supported child abusing priests for years and years.

Mahoney, where is Nicholas Aguilar?Cardinal Rivera of Mexico passed the pervert to you. He was convicted on your watch and now he’s back in the Mexican State of Pueblo giving Mass. Have you no shame at all?

“We can return to our tradition as a nation of immigrants and welcome and invest in them, or we can continue to turn inward to the detriment of our own interests.”Return to our tradition as a nation of immigrants? Over a million immigrants were naturalized in 2008; over 600,000 were naturalized in 2007.Are you under the mistaken impression that our borders have been closed to legal immigration?

  • mac1327

Sorry but Cardinal Mahoney lacks the credibility to rationally comment on this issue. He fails to mention that this country was built by immigrants who assimilated into our culture, learned the language and participated fully in the education system. Secondly, the Cardinal is guilty of participation in the pedophile scandals of the Catholic Church and accordingly should be breaking rocks at some Mexican prison.

Would the cardinal be so pro-immigration if the people he wants to add were not catholic? His church is literally bleeding from the rectum, if it doesn’t replace it’s membership with these third world catholic peasants soon, it will wither away here in America. And they know that.As others have said here, you don’t help yourself by appearing in newspapers. How many people hear your name and don’t think of the $660 million settlement in Los Angeles? You should slink away like the snake you are.

FARNAZMANSOURI – the link you provide connects to an extremely “toned down” precis of a much more “meaty” actual document. Illegal immigration has been a moral disaster for the Americas. The money that immigrants have paid to smugglers has fueld the murder of thousands at the border, just like the drug trade. The more immigration from Central America, the weaker those states have become, which is understable given that their ambitious people have come here. They are being taken over by criminal gangs, kidnapping and drug dealers. Immigrants have left their children behind to be raised by grandparents in order to pursue the almighty dollar and buy tvs and refrigerators for children who now have no parents and are vulnerable to gangs. The American born children are almost equally abandoned as their parents work 3 jobs to keep afloat. The number of immigrants who have children out wedlock, for whatever reason, is a scandal for a population that is at least nominally Catholic. The Church likes to teach English to the immigrants so that they can do a better job at McDonalds. The Church should be making them literate in Spanish and teaching them history and economics so they can go home and participate in saving their own countries from corruption and despotism. If we give legal status to those who came illegally,it will encourage the next generation to do the exact same thing, and we will have more gangs, murders, and dysfunctional children and they will be the underclass because you can’t rise above having parents who abandon you in favor of material things. The Catholic church is not addressing the true moral issues surrounding the immigration we have seen from the Americas.

  • werowe1

Cardinal,The church has no moral authority on this or any issue because they have bee complicit in the crimes committed by their pedophile priests and those who would harbor them.

NO. I DO NOT SUPPORT AMNESTY. ILLEGALS COME HERE WITHOUT VISAS OR COME WITH VISAS AND OVERSTAY. THIS COUNTRY IS NOT A BABYSITTER. WE CANNOT AFFORD TO LET THOUSANDS ENTER THIS COUNTRY EACH YEAR. ILLEGALS KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING WHEN THEY DO NOT OBEY OUR IMMIGRATION LAWS. SO THEY HAVE TO ACCEPT THE CONSEQUENCES. IF I ROB A BANK, CAN I ASK THE US GOVERNMENT TO GRANT ME AMNESTY? NO. SO ILLEGALS CANNOT ASK THE US GOVERNMNET TO GRANT AMNESTY. WHEN A MAN RAPES A WOMAN, CAN THAT RAPIST ASK THE US GOVERNMENT TO GRANT HIM AMNESTY? NO. SO ILLEGALS ARE NOT IMMUNE TO OUR LAWS. WE MUST ENFORCE CURRENT IMMIGRATION LAWS. WE DO NOT NEED TO CREATE NEW LAWS. DEPORT ALL ILLEGALS.

I am a catholic, but comprehensive immigration reform, accrding to the dems, is to get more vote slaves…

The only reform I am interested in is one of immediate arrest and deportation of any illegal immigrant and vigorous prosecution of anyone who employs them

Tax exempt status should be removed from any religious group that sticks its nose (and money and lobbyists) into politics! We have a LEGAL PATH for prospective immigrants to follow. If they choose to sneak into our country instead, then they should not be allowed to even apply for citizenship in the future. They break our laws, refuse to assimilate (we now have TWO LANGUAGES in our country) and demand “rights” to which they are not entitled.Would you allow someone to sneak into your church, steal the money, take communion if not Catholic, and demand that you accept them? NO – you have your rules as a church and we have our rules as a country. Don’t like our rules? Then leave!

  • RickinGeorgia

Cardinal Mahony is just another piece of the Catholic Church that has condoned and hidden the molestation of thousands of little boy here in the US and thousands more abroad. Mahony has no credence to make moral judgements about anything. He is just a puppet of the immoral Catholic Church. The US is a soveriegn nation that should be enforcing their immigration and labor laws. Senator Kennedy promised that that 1986 amnesty was the “last” one. Since then, another 6 or 7 amnesties have been granted to illegal aliens. Enough is enough, we need to enforce our law and encourage policies that follow the “rule of law”. Obama cites this “rule of law” frequently and he would be a hypocrite to support another amnesty for those that knowingly broke our laws while other immigrants wait in the home countries to immigrate legally.Hello Congress…we have record unemployment and illegal aliens have taken jobs that US citizens and legal residents want and need to support their families. We have lost low and medium skilled jobs that are never coming back and will not be replaced by other jobs. We need fewer low skilled workers not more!We cannot support all the poor in the world, why are we supporting those that are lawbreakers?

  • scon101

Cardinal we really do not care what you say.

  • hared

These grifters and criminals can march until their feet fall off, they will never be made citizens in the manner that they demand even. And if this communist manchurian obama knows anything about this country, which appears he knows very little, he will go down as one of the detested presidents in history, and maybe even worse.

  • segeny

“We now live in a society that has accepted de facto the presence of a permanent underclass in our society, without equal rights or protection under the law. This is a current reality our founding fathers sought arduously to avoid.”Um no. They wouldn’t have cared less. Our founding fathers were slaveowners, talk about a REAL underclass without equal rights.

  • hared

They brought their underclass status upon themselves and their illegitimate farts, serves them right. And without our slave owning founding fathers, these border criminals would be floating down the Rio Grande, instead of in our country.

  • dmlpearl

Immigration reform (as you conceive it) is fair to whom, Cardinal? Is it fair to the millions of people around the world who apply for legal immigration and wait years to come? Is it fair to the American taxpayer, who will suddenly be required to supply all elements of citizenship to millions of illegals, only to find out that our blind eye invites millions more?We are nothing without the rule of law, Cardinal. It is not unreasonable for citizens to wonder what other laws you would have us ignore. Are you sure you’re not confusing charity with license?

  • brattykathyi1

Catholics are a deeply demented and extremely dangerous cult. Catholics have caused more deaths and suffering than all other religions combined. These people have not evolved mentally for over 2,000 years. They are still perpetuating the rites, rituals, and superstitions of cavemen. To give heed to anything this idiot spews would be nothing short of insane.

“Our legal immigration system, basically ignored by Congress for nearly 50 years, is outmoded and inadequate to our future labor needs, especially when the economy recovers. There are simply not enough visas for unskilled workers to come legally.”How dare you, sir? How dare you suggest that these are so-called “jobs Americans don’t want” ??There was a time in America when being a carpenter or a meat cutter or a landscaper or a painter or a miner or any of a myriad of other blue collar jobs was enough for a breadwinner to feed his family, provide them shelter and warmth, take care of their health needs, and maybe even send a child to college so their life could be better. You of all people should know that not everyone has the capacity to become a cardinal, a rocket scientist, a politician, or a pro basketball player. Some people need good paying, stable, semi-skilled or pure labor jobs like the ones I mentioned. You cite stories. I have stories too.How about the story of Coy, an unemployed American construction worker with whom I stood on a street corner one morning, watching as contractors lined up to pick up as many immigrants as they thought they needed that day, loading them into the back of their pickup like cattle, and zooming off one after the other to build multimillion dollar mansions at the shore, paying them ten bucks an hour and a roast beef sandwich? Should Coy go get in line with them, Cardinal? Is that what you’re suggesting?I find it fascinating that in your vast experience tending your flock you haven’t encountered many similar occurrences. Rather, I think you just choose your anecdotes very selectively. So no sir, these are not “jobs Americans don’t want.” They are jobs Americans can’t afford to take because wages and benefits have been decimated from policies which you’d like to accelerate, presumably because Latinos are Catholic. Were that not your motive, why would you, as representative of one of the wealthiest institutions known to humanity, call for legitimizing this flood of cheap labor, undermining our own citizens? Finally, who if not you will advocate unashamedly for the American worker first just for one blessed time?

  • djrhood

Hi, Farnaz,Obviously someone like Mahony, the Prime Protector of Pederasts, does not care about Hispanics as people. He cares because if they were not coming here, his church in America would have lost 1/3 of its membership. Note that I want a just, tough, but fair solution to the illegal immigrant problem. Those who cry to send all of them back are just lying sheep in bigot’s clothing. Bush was close to at least the beginning of a solution.

This problem got out of control and the congress more than 15 years ago wouldn’t do anything. Bush sat on his hands and our citizens suffer for it. It’s all about money and getting people to do dirty jobs. Everyone thinks they shouldn’t have to sweat to get a pay check. The illegals will do the hard dirty jobs for peanuts.

A Cardinal of a Church noted primarily for protecting pederast priests, and general child abuse in Ireland they described as “education” (and now Bavaria it seems), is talking about pampering illegal aliens as a MORAL issue? Whatever “moral” weight this group once had has been sodomized out of existence …Although you can see the logic: “Punishing illegal aliens for breaking the law is bad, just like punishing pederast priests is bad for breaking the law.” To their way of thinking, it makes some sense. Not to normal people, but to them …

Let the RCC take care of all current immigrants here illegally. No….. wait….. that would increase the number of potentially abused children one hundred fold. Limits on immigration allow for an orderly influx into society. It follows a path that allows the immigrant a chance to get ahead, to learn our history and culture (while celebrating their own) but I have to think if you want to live here, learn the official language please.

  • pieroni73

As a legal temporary immigrant, want to everybody knows how broken is your system. If illegals don’t deserve to be here, fix your legal system so who deserve to be, at least can be inside the law. The system is so broke that if I apply for permanent residence it will take decades to get it, how that can be? almost any country in the industrialized words takes no more than 6-12 months (England, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Germany, etc) why here takes 10-15 years? That is gonna change the day reciprocity is applied in you american people. Waht about that? what about my Italian country kick your companies out? what about american business in other countries if no americans are allowed to work? Think about that. I’m inside the law and the law treats me same as criminal, so whats the point in been legalized?

How about, when you deport them, treat them with respect. A snack, some water, respectful tone of voice. They are God’s children too. The thieves on the cross were being punished as would any criminal in any country in any era. Hiding from the authorities does not make you a proper resident of this country. To be under the jurisdiction of the United States they need to be subject to law. Also without their formal dismissal of their foreign citizenship it is in doubt whether they intend to seek American citizenship or whether they intend to go back, and whether their foreign government can hold jurisdiction over them. It has been suggested that if their foreign government could hold jurisdiction over them, they might not be under the jurisdiction of the United States, and birthright citizenship might not apply to their children.Build a wall and a barrier against tunneling. It could stimulate jobs. But the important thing for Christians is to treat the deportees as God’s children, as the least of these. Matthew 25.

Birthright citizenship has to stop- it can be abused, it is being abused here, and has been abused in Ireland, it is why the Irish put a stop to it.I think we need to follow the Irish lead and specifically indicate that citizenship must follow biologically from at least one (or both) parent(s), if it isn’t granted administratively to someone with no parentage. The 14th amendment was intended to give citizenship to slaves. It is like the 21st Amendment that reversed Prohibition, a dead amendment that did its job.I hope it will force unemployment numbers to go down and will force underrepresented U.S. minorities to be hired. I have history on my side. During World War II, during a time of compelling national need, when 14 million men were away fighting, sexist prejudices were successfully confronted and women went to work in factories to make materiel of war. (We were still worried Japan could invade the West Coast) But women got jobs when the culture said they shouldn’t and unemployment disappeared. The Pickens Plan or building a border wall (with underground barrier, because you know they will dug under a wall) could stimulate employment too for a) free wind-powered electricity and b) to stop almost all land crossing from Mexico to America.Or if you rather, pass a open border treaty with Mexico with full amnesty. Just enforce the law. God help us if we have to have a draft, we can’t enforce immigration law, we won’t be able to enforce a draft either.

  • cmarshdtihqcom

The illegal aliens are especially cowardly when they make an American citizen child and dare us to deport them and break up the family. They use the kid like a human shield.

No offense pieroni73, but what I think is going on is the Congress doesn’t really want to allow immigrants in. They want to look like they do, but they really don’t.America is a backward country anyway. No national paid maternity leave, no national clean energy policy, still trying to win wars by itself, only now trying to get national health care. I guess you want the economic opportunity though.I am a more progressive thinker than maybe half of America at least. I thought about going to Canada or Britain, but then I thought this country needs people of vision not to quit trying to change things. At least not unless America goes fascist or (maybe) if the national debt exceeds 50% of national wealth.

Conceded, America has people coming in. But still, America is not like its peers in the world, other rich democratic countries. America could learn lessons from Canada, Western and Central Europe, Japan Taiwan Singapore etc. It’s like looking at your friends and seeing how you are. It is a sad thing to say as a native born son of two native born parents but America is a bit of a black sheep. We can still change color though.

“Conceded, America has people coming in.”It’s not so much that people are coming in, as it is that we are having great difficulty keeping them out; many people are literally dying to come in.”But still, America is not like its peers in the world, other rich democratic countries.”True, in many ways America is not like its peers in the world. Sometimes that’s a good thing; sometimes that’s not such a good thing. And, in many ways, many of its peers in the world are not like America. Again, sometimes that’s a good thing; sometimes that’s not such a good thing.Nice back-pedaling, though.”America could learn lessons from Canada, Western and Central Europe, Japan Taiwan Singapore etc.”True, just as those countries could, and do, learn lessons from America.

If the Europeans need to go to war, they form a coalition right? Why are we big on the bulk of the troops/causalties business while our “allies” provide token support? And I reiterate that “Western civilization” requires several of the following: paid maternity leave, national health care, some modicum of safety net.Why are our peers investing in mass transit, walkable communities, and clean energy (French nuclear, German solar) while we’re not? Here’s a big one. When the petroleum output drops precipitously and demand increases dangerously, how do we sustain our 10 petrocalories per food calorie agriculture? We can’t sustain agriculture, suburbia, trucking. China is thinking about how many people it can sustain. Why aren’t we thinking of how many people we could sustain without petroleum? Read

cmarshdtihqcom,You are obviously angry, confused, and scared, and you are asking a lot of questions.I can’t answer them for you. Sorry.BTW, you do realize this is the comment section for an article about immigration reform from the perspective of a catholic high-hat, don’t you?

If the Europeans need to go to war, they form a coalition right? Socialized medicine (among other things) devours all of the state budget. One of the positive effects of Obamacare (from a Liberal viewpoint) is that it will make reasonable national defense spending impossible. The world will not be better off.

  • PSolus

“One of the positive effects of Obamacare (from a Liberal viewpoint) is that it will make reasonable national defense spending impossible. • ZZim

I agree. Now that health care reform will pass, we can move on to other important issues. I expect to see this emerge as a priority in the coming months.I support immigration reform, too. It is extremely unfortunate that President Bush’s immigration reform was stopped by Democratic partisanship and a few obstructionist Republican demagogues. But Obamacare makes immigration reform impossible. The only was it was able to pass is because Obama and Pelosi were able to lie about illegal immigrants getting coverage. If President Bush had managed to pass an amnesty policy, then the cost of covering those 11 million illegals would have to have been included in the bill. But now we have Obamacare. We can’t pretend we don’t. We can’t afford to offer free medical care to 11 million illegal immigrants (we will anyway, but that’s not the point). So any amnesty program will force Congress to account for the cost of covering all those new citizens.Amnesty is dead, Obamacare killed it. I personally would have preferred amnesty over Obamacare. We can’t have both.

Millions of foreigners will die, but it shouldn’t affect Americans very much.Liberals are willing to spend enough to keep foreign invaders off our shores, they’re just not willing to keep foreign invaders off of our foreign allies’ shores.

I’ll stick to topic, we need to amend the 14th amendment to end birthright citizenship. Ireland ended birthright citizenship because it was abused. It is being abused here. U.S. citizenship needs to be a dominant gene from either parent or earned bureaucratically.

I don’t think Obamacare will stop the military industrial complex. Before World War I it was assumed a nation could not sustain a war once it ran out of money. Britain kept fighting with loans from the United States. Suffice it to say that even the winners were paupers after the war, and oddly, Britain was a smaller country after the war (Ireland gained independence). In a book by Niall Ferguson, a case was easily made that Britain, a victor, suffered just as much as the losers.

I don’t think Obamacare will stop the military industrial complex. Posted by: cmarshdtihqcom Nope, probably not. I think it’s a silly (and weak) argument myself. Nevertheless, it’s a commonly-argued position from Leftist-Americans.

  • PSolus

So, where do Leftist-Americans fit in the taxonomy of evil? Are they more evil or less evil that liberals? Are they more evil or less evil that partisan Democrats? Are they more evil or less evil that obstructionist Republican demagogues? Are they more evil or less evil that plain old demagogues?I couldn’t find any information on this in Wikipedia.

  • ZZim

So, where do Leftist-Americans fit in the taxonomy of evil?Posted by: PSolus Leftist-Americans are not inherently evil, merely nice but misguided souls who require guidance and leadership from conservatives, lest they inadvertantly do harm to themselves and others. Sort of like children, except that they vote.I am here to provide that guidance. Please ask if you require enlightenment on any subject. If you question is novel and I do not have an answer immediately at hand, I can simply apply Conservative philosophical principles to your conundrum and provide you with appropriate wisdom and specific advice.

And, btw., why is it that the RCC is so concerned about Hispanics, in particular?Posted by: FarnazMansouri Because most of them are at least nominally Catholic. So it makes sense that the Church would take a pro-Hispanic immigrant stance.Cardinal Mahony is Bishop of Los Angeles. Have you ever attended Mass in Los Angeles?

  • FarnazMansouri

ZZIM,Cardinal Mahony protected pedophiles with careers decades long. This included O’Grady, a direct subordiante of this bastard, O’Grady who raped an infant. This bastard, Mahony, has also been a staunch opponent of gay rights, women’s rights etc. He has a lawyer, who, thus far, has kept protected him from facing charges. He is the tip of the iceberg. As I’ve posted repeatedly, the Vatican was deemed a foreign nation in a recent Apellate Court ruling, and, therefore, immune to lawsuits. At the same time, Vatican Nation is a tax exempt civil institution??!!Said corrupt ring of pedophile priests and their protectors are currently under investigation in Italy for laundering 200 million mafia dollars. They would be the dollars of the mafia is over-running Italy and summarily executes any elected officials who have attempted to stem the flow of organized crime. This corrupt American Foreign Vatican Pedophile Nation is currently seeking rights for Catholics to come here and has devised a “pastoral plan” for them, full text available at Amazon.Said pastoral plan is to be a bullwark against the Evangelicals who are making considerable headway among Latinos, but not Mexicans, thus far. This corrupt foreign nation manipulates legislation, eg., the health care bll, conscience clauses etc..Taken together all of this constitutes racketeering. Simply put, and this is no exaggeration, they are in violation of the Rico Act.So, too, are those who have been in cahoots with them, senators, congressmen, etc.The case was initiated by Serbian, Jewish, and Roma survivors and their heirs, victims of 200 Nazi Franciscan priests who ran and operated concentration camps. These Nazi priests cut people to pieces with scissors and watched them bleed to death. They impaled them in water and watched them drown. The Nazi Franciscan priests took what their victims had and deposited in Vatican Bank, established by Saint Pope Pius XII as a repository for Nazi loot. The Vatican refuses to settle. Just like they refuse to release their holocaust era documents.

Complain if you want to if a certain Catholic official won’t allow gay rights. He is doing his job. What did you expect? Lev. 18:22 (Law of Moses) and never overturned in the New Testament (see Acts 15:29, this is important). In fact, repeated in Romans 1. (Read Matthew 5:18 about what Jesus said about NOT coming to do away with the Law (of Moses).)The reason my Protestant church and the Catholic church will never bless a gay wedding is because it sends the message gay sex can be OK under certain circumstances. The job of our churches is to send a message that it is never OK, ever. You know what happens after weddings, maybe as soon as they find a hotel. There are a few celibate marriages in the People’s Almanac. Just a few.Congratulations on your DC law. Call it a victory and leave the religion in our hands. If you want to join us fine, follow our guidebook. Take it or leave it. I intend to leave you rather much alone. I don’t have the energy to waste on people who don’t care about getting saved.About the women, I think he is out of line to ban birth control, but then again, he is a Catholic and he is doing his job, like his Master in Rome tells him to.

Here is one pro-immigration concern. I was watching Earth 2100 on ABC last June and Mexico seemed to be baked over into adobe because of global warming. Lucy, the protagonist, was an EMT called to a shooting on the border where the military had opened fire on desperate refugees.Do you think Mexico and Central America could be one big sandbox?

It is disturbing as you say, money laundering, lobbying, buying off politicians…. I’ve heard worse, Catholics have first loyalty to the Pope not their country.Perhaps this should be reserved for another thread. We are discussing immigration. Unless the Catholic Church is illegally behind the scenes doing something with immigration.Molestation is not the topic of this thread.G’night.

  • cmarshdtihqcom

I think immigration has much to do with the fact that in Catholic countries in the Western hemisphere, contraception is a sin. They have plenty of people wanting out (and in someplace). It is their own fault….I am sponsoring a 16 year old kid in Guatemala. They warn not to give your address in a letter or you’ll get sob stories left and right. Malthus thought population would rise then come crashing down from starvation or illness. So what does the Pope want with one or two billion people anyway? A holy war?

  • theopaine

More poor devils who drop hard earned cash every sunday into the archbishops pocket.sad.I wonder how many immigrants from non-catholic countries, say, turkey, the arch-y would let in,hummm??
