The new fatwa from the renowned authority of Islamic world, Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, a spiritual leader of the overwhelming majority of Muslims deals a devastating blow to al-Qaeda and its affiliates by removing decisively any remnant of theological justifications for terrorism.

Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri has been obliged to issue this fatwa because of what has been happening in Pakistan over the last year and its affects in the western world. The 600-page fatwa is based on all four schools of jurisprudence: Hanafi, Shafii, Hanbali and Maliki as well as the Jafari. He has consulted hundreds of classical Islamic texts, the scholars, fiqh and the Hadith. The main theme of the Fatwa is that any act of terrorism such as suicide bombing cannot be justified and there are no conditions, no pre-texts or exemptions. Such acts make the people carrying out the attacks unbelievers or kufr.

This fatwa aims to deal a major blow to the phenomenon of terrorism and suicide bombings carried out by organizations and individuals in the name of Islam. One may ask why this fatwa should succeed in achieving this aim. In considering the potential impact of the fatwa, it is not just a question of the number of people that may be influenced by Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri. It is rather the content and substance of the fatwa which is the key to achieving its aim.

The fatwa stands on its own

It is essential to understand that this fatwa consists not merely of a 1 or 2 page opinion on the subject matter, as previous fatwas have been. But this fatwa is a comprehensively researched and evidenced paper, one that derives from numerous references from the Qur’an and the Prophetic traditions [the primary scriptural resources of Islam], along with a comprehensive range of classical and authoritative texts of Islamic Jurisprudence and Belief that no Muslim can dare to deny. The in-depth study of these references and reasoned argument leads to only one valid conclusion – that Islam absolutely forbids the killings of civilian and non-combatants and suicide bombings under any circumstances and with no exceptions or caveats. But the key point is these conclusions are not based upon the author’s interpretation or ijtihad of these references, but that he takes into account the judgments of recognized and accepted classical scholars and authorities.

How this fatwa will work

This fatwa will engage in the battle for the hearts and minds of Muslims through several fronts. It will clarify the concepts of the brainwashed radicals at an intellectual level and will address all of their ‘justifications’ and will leave absolutely no pretext for committing acts of terror or suicide bombings. The fatwa presents clear, evidence-based arguments that this kind of Muslims will not previously have encountered or been presented with. The fatwa will either completely alter their thinking, and bring them back to the true Islamic position or at the very least will lessen the enthusiasm of their support or diminish their sympathies for the perpetrators.

Secondly it will de-radicalize the radicals. There is a substantial minority those already on the path of radicalization, made vulnerable through sentiments and their grievances in relation to what they see as injustices carried out against Muslims around the world. Through misguided and manipulative preachers and via internet postings their presupposition of what is or what is not outside the bounds of permissibility. This fatwa will present an authoritative position on the absolute condemnation by Islam of employing violence to further one’s aims, and undermine their belief in the permissibility of and even reward gained by committing indiscriminate violence and suicide attacks. This will inject doubt to the mind of the radical, if not completely convince the radical to reform himself as in Islam where there is doubt, it should be avoided. This will make him much less likely take that final and terrible step to kill.

Thirdly it will prevent millions of ordinary Muslims who have absolutely no tendency towards violence or inclination towards religious radicalism, but it is this general populace that provides the recruiting ground for religious radicals. This fatwa provides an intellectual defense against radical propaganda or distorted religious teachings and minimize the potential for an ordinary Muslim to fall prey to preachers and internet postings and such like and prevent them embarking upon the path or radicalism.

Well, hope this fatwa works. We have had so many well-meaning fatwas before but they all fell by the wayside. This fatwa has good intentions but will it be embraced by Muslims, particularly the radicalized ones, let alone the terrorists? We will soon find out. Bombings should go down immediately once the fatwa starts to take hold. Otherwise, it is another dud guys.

Good for the Sheik. Also quite courageous; let’s hope the man is alive in two weeks. The problem with Fatwas is that they are only binding upon the one who made them. The goons who live for the 72 angels will have their own Fatwas to justify their terrible acts.

This is good news, as far as it goes. Bin Laden’s first fatwah, issued in Dec. 1998, laid out three specific grievances against the United States. Although those grievances were political in reality, Bin Laden chose to call them However, as a form of warfare, terrorism has long been used by the politically weak and the militarily helpless. Just taking religion out of the equation is huge, especially in terms of recruitment, but still leaves the other two conditions unsatisfied.

How many Muslims can read? And of those how many will put the effort to study 600 pages of dry theology? And for what purpose? To squander the promise of 72 receptive dark eyed virgins in the prime of their youth cavorting with each Jihadist in an eternal celestial orgy? I would rather doubt it but nevertheless hope I am dead wrong.

  • AKafir

The proof lies in actions. Kaafirs have been killed and will be killed by the muslims. The minorities have been, are, and will be mistreated by the muslims because that is intrinsic to Islam. So the claim is that this fatwa hundreds of pages thick will compete for the hearts and minds of the muslims who want to blow themselves up to kill Kaafirs. How long will the Kaafirs have to wait to see if this fatwa amounts to anything? Self preservation suggests that the Kaafirs should assume that it will not amount to much, and very likely on close reading of the hundreds of pages there will be loop holes galore.

  • poosky

Well I congratulate the Imam on finally figuring this out.But who are these folks who need a Fatwa to tell them that murdering innocent civilians is wrong?

  • arkns

Instead of so many contradictory fatwas, we need just one fatwa calling for a thorough revision of the Koran.Take out all insulting references to Jews and other infidels.Take out all references that can be construed to support violence and intolerance.Take out all references that support the mixing of religion and politics.Take out all references to gender inequality.Take out all references to coercion and compulsion in religion including death threats for apostates.Introduce beautiful new language that encourage man’s right to question! Nothing should be sacrosanct! Nothing!Submit the revised edition to infidels for further editing. EVEN GOD HAS TO MAKE SENSE. NO, HE DOES NOT HAVE A BLANK CHECK TO SAY WHATEVER HE WANTS! MUSLIMS–REPEAT THIS BEFORE AND AFTER EVERY NAMAZ.

What does “radicalized” mean? I would like the people who use this term to define it in English please. Once it is defined I want those who use it to see whether or not the United States is “radicalized” as per this offered definition. Is it evidence of radicalization to have a policy that allows the killing of hundreds of thousands of civilians in Iraq, Afghanstan and Pakistan in the last nine years? All the usual excuses (civilian in th wrong place at the wrong time) that are offered seem to be the very same things that this fatwa they are so pleased will not abide. In fact it characterizes “accidents” like these as illegimate acts and sunful. You know, on second thought I guess this 600 page fatwa wouldn’t be helpful or persuasive to people with the excuses I just outlined. My hope is that Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri will expand his audience to include non-Believers. He needs to simply retype the cover page, change the title to let’s say “dawah” instead of fatwa and share all of his enjoining to the good and forbiding evil with this new, wider audience he has garnered. Maybe after receiving this reforworded 600 page document these non-Muslims will continued to be impressed and move through that feeling to being persuaded enough to stop killing innocent Muslim women and children who happen to be near their “radicalized” brethren.

Radical means extreme.Every country on earth reserves the right to wage war, and not a single one of them is willing to surrender this right to an international authority. War is considered acceptable and normal by all countries, all people and all religions. By conventional standards that have always prevailed in all of history, war is actually more normal than peace.

Arkins,Safiyah111, please read the hadith about how your namesake was forced into islam by your very own ‘radicalized’ prophet mohammed. How the 17 year old was raped, how her family was brutally killed and she forced into sex the same day. It is so strange that you ask what radicalized means. Maybe you need to checkout our latest radicalized Jihad Jane?

What nonsense are these Fatwas for? These theocratic goons have been whipping up Jihad for past 63 some years. These clerics have been preaching the morons that they will be going to be in New Delhi any day, cuz the kafir Hindus are too much of chicken littles to stand up to the true believers. When they got a bloody nose with 100,000 of their brave warriors were taken prisoner, after they raped and pillaged their own Muslims who spoke a different language, in 1971 they went to Simla on their elbows, & knees to get their brave ones. Every step of the way during this period the clerics in pakistan had been preaching Jihad against India.Next came the phase whipping up the fanatics after some sabbatical of some 20 years, as the military was thoroughly discredited in 1971. Then of course the so called civilian rulers happened to be just as corrupt as the military goons, so guess what the clerics started out whipping the kashmir question and fanning the jihadi flames for the past 20 years now. Where was this Qadri fellow doing all these 20 years, other than stoking the flames. This is nothing but unadulterated you know what.

Christopher3 writes:”The “fatwa” is full of lies.”————————————————–Thanks for that link to an insightful article, written by some miscellaneous blogger who cobbled together some stuff that some Muslims wrote once, and not in response to this fatwa, then included quotes from the Koran without the backing they need to be useful (remember, the Koran is a document that developed over time, and you can’t just cherry-pick things from it at random).I’ll believe some random blogger when they manage to post something that is as intellectually rigorous as the original fatwa.OK, even then, I will blow them off, unless they are considered a scholar by a reasonable subset of one of Muslim’s factions.

  • Navin1

Poosky, you hit it the nail on the head.I agree with most of the posts. I hope only that this “fatwa” is spread more in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Malaysia, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, etc than in the US. Can we all get into this fatwa game? You must eat pork.OK, damn it, make up your own fatwa and decide how you want to personally relate to the truth, let others make up their own minds, and that is what you live by.hariaum

Ayaan Hirsi Ali vs. Hitman2 From answers.com “Ayaan Hirsi Ali (); Somali: ; born Ayaan Hirsi Magan 13 November 1969 in Mogadishu, Somalia)[1] is a Dutch intellectual, feminist activist, writer, and politician. She is the estranged daughter of the late Somali scholar, politician, and revolutionary opposition leader Hirsi Magan Isse. She is a prominent critic of Islam, and her screenplay for Theo Van Gogh’s movie Submission led to death threats. Since van Gogh’s assassination by a Muslim extremist in 2004, she has lived in seclusion under the protection of Dutch authorities. When she was eight, her family left Somalia for Saudi Arabia, then Ethiopia, and eventually settled in Kenya. She sought and obtained political asylum in the Netherlands in 1992, under circumstances that later became the center of a political controversy. In 2003 she was elected a member of the House of Representatives (the lower house of the Dutch parliament), representing the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD). A political crisis surrounding the potential stripping of her Dutch citizenship led to her resignation from the parliament, and led indirectly to the fall of the second Balkenende cabinet.[2][3]She is currently a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank, and has been living in the United States.[4][5] In 2005, she was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.[6] She has also received several awards including Norway’s Human Rights Service’s Bellwether of the Year Award, the Danish Freedom Prize, the Swedish Democracy Prize (awarded in 2005 by the Liberal Party,[7] a party which has been advocating a firmer stand on issues of assimilation of immigrants and promoting resistance to Islam in recent years), and the Moral Courage Award for commitment to conflict resolution, ethics, and world citizenship.[8] In 2006 she published her memoir, which appeared in English translation in 2007 titled Infidel.[9] In a review posted on the summer reading list for the Middle East Strategy at the Harvard University website, Joshua Muravchik described the book as “simply a great work of literature,” and compared her to novelist Joseph Conrad.[“vs. Hitman2 (education unknown)

Otherside of Ayaan Hirsi AliBy Black Agenda Report editor and senior columnist Margaret Kimberley:”Ms. Ali lost her halo in The Netherlands when it was discovered she had lied on her immigration papers, but was soon recruited into the self-hating Black grouplet at the right-wing American Enterprise Institute, where she pretends to be a “scholar.” America – what a country! Denounce your own people, and they’ll make you a star.”"The fairy tale story is just that. Ayaan Hirsi Ali exults in the lowest depths of self-hatred. She has become well paid and famous because she demonizes her fellow Muslims. As with black Americans or any other group of despised people, the self haters, the Uncle Toms, are given a clear path to fortune and favor.”"When Ali left the Netherlands to live in the United States, her true ideology came to light. She became a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, one of the most powerful right-wing think tanks in the nation. Other AEI scholars include John Bolton, Lynne Cheney, David Frum, Newt Gingrich, Charles Murray, Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, and John Yoo.”
