By Elizabeth Tenety

Even popes need to be careful what they wish for.

Three months ago, Pope Benedict gathered hundreds of painters, singers, sculptors, writers, actors and poets into the Sistine Chapel and called on them to ponder the “harmony between the journey of faith and the artist’s path,” and to consider ways to use their art and their platforms for God.

Elton John wasn’t in attendance, but he apparently got the message.

As reported in Reliable Source, in an upcoming issue of Parade, Elton John used his celebrity to advance his unconventional theology:

“I think Jesus was a compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems. On the cross, he forgave the people who crucified him. Jesus wanted us to be loving and forgiving. I don’t know what makes people so cruel. Try being a gay woman in the Middle East — you’re as good as dead.”

Elton John is hardly the first celebrity to make controversial claims about the son of God. Here are nine others. Vote on your favorite, and let us know who we missed.

About

Elizabeth Tenety Elizabeth Tenety is the former editor of On Faith, where she produced "Divine Impulses," On Faith’s video interview series. She studied Theology and Government at Georgetown University and received her master’s degree from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. A New York native, Elizabeth grew up in the home of Catholic news junkies where, somewhere in between watching the nightly news and participating in parish life, she learned to ponder both the superficial and the sacred.

The media gives too much attention to uninformed celebrity opinion. I don’t know if JC was gay — and neither does anybody else. It’s all beside the point of the man’s (Jesus’) main message. No doubt someone will point out the “abomination” quote from the bible, to which I would say: get back on point.

Was Jesus gay? Here are some quotations from the Bible (New International Version):——————-21-After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me.”22-His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23-One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. 24-Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”25-Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”John 20:1-Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 2-So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”John 21:20-Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”)—————-

You know people are starving to death in this country (USA) and kids don’t have health care. So what do we do? Spend all our time obsessing over gay people. What other people do in the privacy of their bedrooms is none of your business. And isn’t it interesting that the same people who prattle on about getting government out of our lives, want to use it to control other people’s sex lives? Can you say BUSYBODY?

Elton John, with foot in mouth again. What unnecessary commentary. In a way he perpetuates a gay stereotype, which is that affection between men (Jesus and John?) must be sexual. Hopefully Elton John lives in a mental world bigger than that.

I always love it when so called Christians make bigoted remarks…I’m pretty sure Jesus just wasn’t into that sort of thing. He said once, I new commandment I give you, love one another….I think that would be a good place to start and a good measure of how close people are to following Jesus’ teachings.

Jesus taught us to love one another and that judgment is reserved to God alone. As far as the gay community is concerned it is good to note that an estimated 28% of Catholic priests are gay, about the same percentage of Republicans in Congress, and a good number in the military protecting this nation. By the way, I’m straight.

It is funny that Elton John has so many opinions about Jesus the Christ since in his excellent career spanning more than 25 albums / CDs he has mentioned Jesus about 3 times, once with the lyrics that “Jesus wants to go Venus”. Granted Elton only writes the music to his songs, Bernie Taupin writes the words. But, if Jesus the Christ is such an important topic to Sir Elton, how about including him in some of your lyrics!

I keep wondering when the Washington Post (or any other MSM outlet) will publish a story entitled: “Was Mohammed gay?” Or how about “Was Mohammed a pedophile?” given the fact his wife as nine-years-old.Ummmm, how about never.Liberals believe that freedom of speech is a beautiful thing except for Christians and conservatives. And, of course, they certainly wouldn’t want to say anything to “offend” Muslims.

  • Chaotician

Gotta Love It! The delusions of the human mind are so delicious; the novelty will never end! You Christians know that Jesus got that surname several centuries after his purported death…right? You know that if Jesus was GOD, and you certainly can not kill GOD; therefore if Jesus was really killed then it was either a big play of GOD, or a hoax..right? You do know that good ole Paul; the founder of Christianity admits to never actually seeing or hearing Jesus…if he really existed at all? If GOD was going to go to the bother of incarnating as an illiterate carpenter in a Roman occupied land and have the story tellers some 3-4 centuries later write the definitive book on how to live and join GOD in eternal adoration; that maybe, just maybe, he could have written something in blazing letters on some mountain somewhere…maybe? or at least scrawled a note saying “Jesus was Here”? Something??

Elton John seems to make such remarks to validate his choice in such matters as being a gay man. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. He was the Word of God in the old testament before he emptied himself of being that to become human. He, as the word, and inspiring others words, warned that homosexuality is not acceptable (the action…not the person) and is a perversion. All of this is based on scripture…not personal interpretation such as EJ tried to do.

  • mgeorgeg

Fascinating that no one is interested in taking John’s suggestion seriously . . . as though it really would be blasphemous to suggest that Jesus was gay. Why? If one is truly tolerant of homosexuality, why is it wrong to make that suggestion? In fact, if the gospels are to be taken as evidence, the most reasonable conclusion was that Jesus was gay. He walked around with a bunch of guys advocating peace and love. He died a virgin. He was a highly non-conformist individual. He was clearly an outsider. I absolutely believe that he was gay.

  • WmarkW

Elton John is not a theologian or biblical scholar, so he’s entitled to one man’s opinion the same as anyone else is.(And he’s probably right.)

  • Afraid4USA

Many gay men seriously believe that most, if not all, men who are unmarried and/or have not children are gay. I was seriously told by a gay friend that George Washington was gay, because he had no kids. This appropriation of straight historical men as gay is a way of legitimizing their “lifestyle.” Of course, there were a lot of closet gays, like Michelangelo, an outwardly very religious man (supporter of Savonarola) and Leonardo DaVinci (who was so greatly offended at being accused of being gay in Florence, he moved to Milan). How to prove these men were NOT gay 400 years later. And, when you suggest they aren’t you are accused of being a homophobe. So, I am not surprised that they have claimed Jesus as one of their own. (Real scholars have wondered why he was roaming around Judea with a bunch of men when he should have been living in one place with a wife and reproducing like a good Jew, so this isn’t the first time this issue has been raised.) I seriously doubt that the historical Jesus, a devout Jew, practiced sodomy with his disciples, but what do I know? I do know there’s no evidence to support Elton’s assertion, so case closed. Don’t go there. Message to Gay Community: Not all men are secret gays. Eat your heart out. Finally, why would WAPO even bother to waste the newsprint or bandwidth on what such eminent theologians as Marilyn Manson, Elton John, Elvis, Madonna, etc. think about Jesus? Answer: to get people riled and bring out the fundamentalists foaming at the mouth with rage. Is that the purpose of this column or is it serious discussion of matters of faith?? Another point: This ludicrous series of questions is another example of how “celebrities” in this shallow culture have become leaders. Does anyone with a brain cares what George Clooney thinks about anything but acting….

  • FridayKnight

And, anyone who questions this assertion is a bigot.

Read what C.S. Lewis had to say about sexuality in his book the Hideous Strength, the last book of a trilogy (Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, Hideous Strength). Its very interesting and very relevant to this discussion.Jesus was fully human but his passion, his deepest desire was not sexual, for sexuality is too limited an aspect of humanity to emcompass the majesty and the power of the Incarnate Word. His eros was doing the will of the father (eros in the classical meaning of deep seated love)

Elton John’s Gayism does not extend to Jesus, who lived thirty three lives to reach the Messiah Level from Amilus to Jesus he lived and died as a Man, the only “Begotten Son of God” and in his Redemptive Status, sex was not the issue for which he came, but he came to die for our sins, giving us the right to “Salvation” and “Eternal Life.” When those who have lived lives as male or female for many life times, which makes his or her soul more male or female and they take the option to return in reincarnation, without waiting for the Plan that has been put in place for them, they find themselves with more gendered male souls in female bodies and vice versa, which leads to Gayism or Lesbianism. Elton, being Gay does not give you the right to condemn Jesus to your live style.

  • Beingsensible

You know…I try really hard not to judge people; even those who choose lifestyles that are specifically identified as an abomination in the Bible. In my opinion, based upon God’s Word being gay is no different than being an adulterous, a fornicator, a liar, etc., etc., they are all sins of the flesh. All are continuous acts, so unless a person decides to refrain from any of these acts and then ask for forgiveness, they are all “living in” sin. I have nothing against gay people…in fact; I am more tolerant of gays than I am of any of the others that I have mentioned. As it is written in scripture, love the sinner; hate the sin–that’s my philosophy in life; scripture also states that we have “all” sinned and fallen short of His glory…the difference is to sin is to be given the opportunity to seek forgiveness; to live in sin—how does one seek forgiveness? But Elton John has made a judgment upon Christ that is nestled in his own sinful behavior and that is an abomination. Prior to this comment of his, to me he was a great entertainer, but hence forth and forever more in my mind he is the crud of the earth. I pray that he will find it in his heart to at least ask forgiveness of this one sin before he meets his maker. And finally, for all of you right-wing religious fundamentalist who hate folks based upon their race, sex, sexual preference, religion, nationality, etc.; you will be judged worst than any gay person on your judgment day, because you of all people should know better–you use the scriptures to justify your hate, and therefore your acts are no different than this comment and belief of Elton John’s!

Freedom of Religion in the United States is great… until someone believes in a religion that is different from yours. I think President Obama spoke the truth when he spoke about Conservative Anglo Saxons clinging to their religion and guns. Especially when they’re afraid of the status quo changing. I guess, if those people whom are afraid change and evolution within society are really saying that they want to continue to see the oppression of minorities, gays, and lesbians.

Had to laugh when I heard Elton’s comment. When I was a kid, I had an aunt who used to say the same thing. I don’t find it offensive as I too believe Jesus was welcoming of everyone, yes even gay people. I see all the hatred today that Christians toss at other “different” people and they forget that in His day, Jesus was VERY different and non-conforming. Whether Jesus was gay or not isn’t the issue. I do think Jesus wouldn’t have had any problem with gays and would have treated them the same as all His children.

The best Jesus quote I heard in my life came from a young Army private with whom I bunked during Basic Training. Once he finished boot camp, he was going on to become a vehicle mechanic. I, other the hand, was going to study Arabic to become an interpreter, but this was something he simply could not understand. “Why on earth would anyone want to study a foreign language?” he asked. My attempts to extol the virtues of travel, understanding other cultures, meeting new people, etc. were all met with a look of befuddled bemusement. Finally, he settled the issue.”Well,” he said with heart-felt devotion, “if English was good enough for Jesus, then it’s good enough for me.”(I met him again many years later in Iraq. A fine soldier, he had since been promoted to First Sergeant and was NCOIC of a transportation unit, looking after the daily welfare and safety of over 400 soldiers in the most dangerous part of Iraq. All Jesus did was turn water into wine (once), fed some hungry people (once), and walk on water (once). I’d take this sergeant over Jesus as a savior any day of the week!)

  • Bluefish2012

Elton John may be right, for all we know. But if Jesus was gay, the larger question would be whether he ever chose to lead a sexual life that conformed to his gay nature. The truth we believe—and there is no evidence to the contrary—is that Jesus never once gave in to sin. He did not violate the truth of his human nature or his Father’s law.Do gays ever ask, if Jesus was gay, how would he (indeed, how did he) have handle(d) his sexuality?

According to your Bible, Jesus regularly travelled, ate and slept with 12 guys (no one disciple in particular, but evidently he was pretty hot for James, or was it John?) and he hung out with a couple of local fag hags (Mary, and the other Mary. They must have been fag hags because you guys are absolutely apoplectic if anyone even suggests that Jesus actually slept with a woman). And frankly Christians, if you were in your 30s, unmarried, hanging out with a bunch of guys who left their wives to follow only you, even in ancient Israel, you would be gay…really gay. And if Jesus actually hated homos as much as spidermean says we all should, then Jesus was deep into the closet, just like spidermean. C’mon! The “H” stands for Harold. Jesus Harold Christ.

  • MarilynManson

it’s pretty obvious Jesus was gay, but he was lucky to live in a time and in a culture where apparently he could get away with it. it’s sad now how people can be so disrespectful to Jesus and his teachings about love, to twist the bible to suit their own hate filled agenda.

  • LifeBeforePrinciple

Jesus was someone who actualized the potential of a human being. He became enlightened. Very few people have knowledge and experience about that process.

For those of you who think “GAY” only applies to “leftists”, remember Larry Craig and other high profile right-wing hypocrites who were caught in gay situations they themselves initiated.

You know, I don’t know what the deal is with people nowadays. We simply make up stuff and “because it’s on the Internet” it must be true. Elvis Presley never at any point called himself “the king.” He got angry and walked off stage and told the folks who were listening “There ain’t but One King!” He was referring to Jesus Christ. There is also a rumor going around that John Lennon said the Beatles were greater than God then was shot three times. For one thing, people who would never say something like that have been shot; and for another thing, John Lennon lived another nearly 40 years after that statement was made. Why would it have taken God nearly 40 years to have John Lennon shot, particularly considering that he lived long enough to not only have a lucrative and successful career, but died in infamy, with plenty of money, and still beloved by his biggest fans, having written “Imagine,” a top-selling much-sung song to this day. Get a grip folks. Don’t believe the hype. Michael Jackson didn’t self-pronounce himself the King of Pop, either. Michael was a very humble man for someone who stayed in so much trouble–the kind he got himself into and the kind others made for him. Stop drinking the Kool-Aid. If Elton John thinks Jesus Christ was “gay,” then he’s got mental problems accountable and attributable only to himself and for which he will, one day, have to answer.

  • djrhood

Elton John is an angry old bloated man. It is a stupid comment from a stupid man and deserves no response.

What did the “H” stand for?

  • spidermean2

Elton John is a good example why OPENLY GAYS should not be allowed in the military. It would not only ruin the military, it will destroy America. We can’t allow idiots to guard us.

  • spidermean2

“Likewise, their men have given up natural sexual relations with women and burn with lust for each other. Men commit indecent acts with men, so they experience among themselves the PUNISHMENT they deserve for their perversion.” (Romans 1:27)

  • midas20874

Elton John is a sociopathic and unintelligent homosexual. For him to make such a blasphemous statement about my Lord Jesus Christ displays his highest level of insanity. I will not listen to his songs again. Ever! I was tolerant of his homosexuality but now he could not be tolerant of Jesus Christ and His followers without making ridicle of God the Son.

  • bucinka8

Just because Jesus never married doesn’t mean he was a homophile (that term seems more appropriate for the times he lived in than the modern time of gay). Personally, I think Jesus was asexual: he had bigger things to worry about than sex, and, as it turns out, very little time to achieve his goals.

  • Alex511

fr beingsensible:>You know…I try really hard not to judge people; even those who choose lifestyles that are specifically identified as an abomination in the Bible. I have nothing against gay people…in fact; I am more tolerant of gays than I am of any of the others that I have mentioned….I love it when anti-gays actually claim that they are “more tolerant of gays …” and also compare us to pedophiles, murderers, those who have sex with animals, etc. It’s really sad that people who believe this obviously live in mommy’s basement.

  • levj0nes

I straight up love Jesus Christ, the Lord and Savior, the son of man. I don’t take offense from Sir Elton J’s comment. I don’t think Jesus was gay, though. But I do think he was black as night. Holla!

  • sophic

It’s good to hear from that great biblical scholar Elton John… I wonder if he dose his own taxes too and says “I think” I can deduct this too…

“Since I joined the [Mormon] Church, I desire to be more and more obedient to God. As I do so, many people say to me, ‘I see a light in you more than ever before. What is it?’”"But I would never steal anyone’s boyfriend. It’s bad karma, and I’m a big believer in karma—hence the fact that I’ve studied kabbalah. I’m very true to the “Treat people the way you want to be treated” sort of thing.” “The thought of eternal life appeals to me.” “I hope by the time it’s my moment to leave this world physically, I’ll have gotten my head around the idea that life is an endless cycle.” “God comes first. Paradise is not cheap.” “Were it not for Scientology, I would either be completely insane or dead by now.” “I think we all have a little voice inside us that will guide us. It may be God, I don’t know. But I think that if we shut out all the noise and clutter from our lives and listen to that voice, it will tell us the right thing to do. The Unitarian believes that God is good, and believes that God believes that man is good. Inherently. The Unitarian God is not a God of vengeance. And that is something I can appreciate.”"I read the Kabbalah books and I meditate on them … They are all in Hebrew. I don’t understand everything. But it’s kind of OK that you don’t. … Kevin isn’t into it as intensely as I am. For some reason I’m thirsting for it.”"I’m just trying to say, The way school need teachers / The way Kathie Lee needed Regis / That’s the way y’all need Jesus / So here go my single, dog / Radio needs this.”
