Apostles Church NYC (UES)

About Us

From the church's website, which can be found at http://www. apostlesnyc. com/info/new-here:"I'm New HereWe know it can be somewhat unnerving to step into a new environment, especially when there are a lot of unknowns. To give you a glimpse of what you can expect, we have put together answers to some frequently asked questions about the church that will help you understand what Apostles is like week to week and hopefully address issues important to you. What kind of church is Apostles Church?Apostles Church is a diverse, growing community that is exploring what it means to live out the good news of Jesus in a global city. We are an interdenominational church committed to the historic Christian faith as lined out in the Apostles and Nicene Creeds. What kind of people come to Apostles Church? At Apostles you will find people of different ethnicities, socio-economic backgrounds, professions, people who grew up in the NYC area as well as people who just moved here from different parts of the country. Spiritually speaking, you will encounter people who are all in different places in their spiritual journey. Some are exploring the Christian faith for the first time; others are returning and others have spent most of their lives in church. What if I don't normally go to church? That's OK. We have many people in our church for whom the church experience is new. We seek to create a welcoming environment for those who are curious about God, but have never felt comfortable in church. We also do our best to explain each element of the worship gathering so that people don't get lost along the way. We want Apostles to be a place where you can learn, apply and wrestle with who God is and what He wants for you. It's okay if you don't have it all figured out yet; we don't either. What are the worship gatherings like? The worship gatherings at Apostles are relaxed, but focused. We aren't flashy and we don't believe people need big productions to connect with God. We follow a basic pattern of meeting together that is traced back to the early Church. We teach from the Bible. We pray, meditate, sing and reflect. We respond by taking communion together. We try to make our worship gatherings accessible to those who are new to the Christian faith, and at the same time, fresh for those who have been in the church for a long time. What does the pastor usually talk about? We believe that God wants to be involved in our everyday lives, so we present the ageless truths of the Bible in a format that's easy to understand, even if you've never been to church. At the core of the message each week is the Gospel - the good news that in Jesus Christ, God is healing us and all creation. We believe this message has amazing ramifications for our lives and relationships so we try to communicate it in fresh and meaningful ways each week. What about my children?Apostles Church is a family-friendly environment. We believe that children are a blessing from God and should be taught about God and his plan for the world in a fun learning environment. For more information on Apostles Kids, click here. What should I wear?Wear whatever you feel comfortable wearing. Though there is no set dress code at Apostles, most of our people dress on the casual side. Can I invite my friends? We would love for you to invite your friends. We do our best to be a warm and welcoming environment for people who are curious about Christianity or who are looking to belong to a community of Christ-followers. "
